Donna Reed, Piano Teacher

Donna Reed, Teacher

Mississippi Music Inc.

I teach piano lessons and Kindermusik classes at Mississippi Music, located in Flowood, MS, and I absolutely LOVE my job! My goal as a teacher is to teach my students the language of music, to impart to each student a genuine love for music, and to teach a skill that will last a lifetime!

I am a member of MTNA (Music Teachers National Association), MMTA (Mississippi Music Teachers Association), and our local teacher group, Music Forum of Jackson. I currently serve as the co-chair of the Sonata-Sonatina Festival. My students have the opportunity to participate in local piano festivals, including the Sonata-Sonatina Festival, Bach Festival, Hymn Festival, and MMTA pre-collegiate competition each year. Students have consistently received superior ratings when participating in these events. My students also have the opportunity to perform in an end-of-year recital in late April or early May each year.

I grew up in the small, central Mississippi town of French Camp, where I began piano lessons at the age of 11. I was blessed to have supportive and loving parents and a wonderful and encouraging teacher, Mrs. Carolyn Scoggins Rodgers, who was not only my instructor, but my mentor and lifelong friend, as well.

I received a Bachelor of Music degree in piano from Belhaven University, studying piano with Mr. William Avera, and a Master of Music degree from Mississippi College in Clinton, MS, where I studied with Dr. Ralph Taylor. During my time in college, I was afforded the opportunity to participate in master classes with the great concert pianists, Lili Kraus and Gyorgy Sandor. I also competed in Mississippi Music Teachers Collegiate Competition during my undergraduate study at Belhaven and was awarded first place in the Sophomore Piano Solo category.

In addition, I was selected to play in the Belhaven Honors Recital for three consecutive years and also competed in the Miss Mississippi Pageant as Miss Belhaven College.

After college, I pursued a career in the public schools as an elementary music specialist, teaching K-6th grades. During that time I served as chair of the Elementary Choral Festival in Jackson Public Schools and I conducted in-service workshops for elementary music teachers in Jackson Public Schools and Clinton Public Schools. In addition to teaching classroom music, I also taught Yamaha music classes in Jackson, MS, for 16 years, introducing children as young as 4 years of age to the joy of playing the piano.

I currently maintain a studio of 44 piano students, teach Kindermusik classes, and serve as the pianist at Ridgecrest Baptist Church in Madison, MS.

In my spare time, I enjoy reading, playing piano, taking my sweet dogs, George and Otis for a walk, (with Oscar, the cat, following along at a safe distance), and more than anything, spending time with my family which includes my husband, David, my sons and daughters-in-law, Chris and Melanie, Brett and Blair, and my precious grandchildren, Wyatt, Chapman, and Collin.
